What is a birthstone?

A birthstone is a gemstone assigned to a period when someone is born. Birthstones can reflect someone’s zodiac sign but more often represent calendar months. Each month has its own birthstone, meaning you have your own, too!

In some cases, you may even have two. This is because there are two recognised lists of birthstones. The traditional list’s origin is disputed. Some believe it originated in Poland during the 18th century, while others place it in 16th-century Germany.  What we do know for sure is the modern list was created by the National Association of Jewellers in the USA in 1912.

Learning about your birthstone could help you understand your birth period’s spiritual meaning and symbolism. Similar to zodiac signs and astrology, birthstones can act as guidance for us to understand our identities, traits and compatibility with others.

Find your birth month and learn all about your birthstone and its symbolic significance.

January birthstone – Garnet

Garnet earrings in front of a plant.

If you’re a New Year’s baby, your birthstone is the garnet. These gemstones often come in deep red shades, such as maroon. A recognisable gemstone since the Bronze Age, garnets were even included in the necklaces of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Garnets were believed to possess healing powers in ancient times, while today they represent peace, health and friendship. Others believe garnets protect the wearer from harm on their journeys.

Wear your January birthstone proudly with our gorgeous garnet earrings, ring or necklace. You can embrace the friendship the stone represents by gifting a friend matching garnet jewellery that symbolises your bond.

February birthstone – Amethyst

An Amethyst stone.

February’s birthstone is Amethyst, and these gemstones are often gorgeous shades of purple. Commonly associated with spirituality, mental clarity, and healing, Amethysts were also connected to royalty due to their longstanding royal association with the colour purple.

Find the perfect piece for your February-born friends or yourself at Faith Jewellers. Keep spirit and stone connected with a round pendant, or gift a stunning bracelet glowing in purple.

March birthstone – Aquamarine

An Aquamarine engagement ring.

Aquamarine is March’s birthstone and is easily identifiable by its stunning turquoise and blue hues that bring a signature shine to any jewellery. Given its name and the mesmerising blue shades, it should come as no surprise that this gemstone is heavily associated with the ocean and is thought to protect those at sea. Modern interpretations see aquamarines as symbols of happiness and everlasting youth.

Our birthstone collection includes several gorgeous aquamarine pieces for those born in March. The stand-outs include our Swarovski stud earrings, a lovely halo ring, and a D for Diamond children’s necklace.

A diamond ring.

The classic and iconic diamond is the birthstone for April. Aren’t you lucky? This famous gemstone epitomises class, sophistication, elegance and luxury. Diamonds, of course, symbolise eternal love and companionship, as they so often appear on wedding and engagement rings.

There’s no such thing as too many diamonds, especially not for an April baby! Embrace the diamond’s symbolism with a shimmering necklace, gorgeous bracelet or breathtaking ring.

May birthstone – Emerald

An Emerald stone.

Another iconic gemstone is the emerald which is the birthstone for those born in May. One of the ‘big four’ gemstones, alongside ruby, sapphires and diamonds, emeralds are instantly recognisable due to their incredible green hues that come from their chromium and vanadium properties. Some believe emeralds bring heightened intelligence and objectivity to one’s thinking.

While we can’t promise intellectual boosts, we guarantee you’ll look fantastic with our emerald jewellery, including a halo ring, an adorable Disney-themed necklace and elegant teardrop earrings.

June birthstone – Pearl

A Pearl necklace.

Those born in June have the exciting privilege of their birthstone being the pearl. What makes this so exciting is that the pearl is a unique birthstone, the only gemstone found in living creatures. Most on the market today are not found in molluscs, but their appearance remains incredible. Honesty, purity and wisdom are all associated with pearls.

July birthstone – Ruby

A Ruby stone.

It’s fitting that those who celebrate their birthday at the height of summer get to do it with the bright red hues of a ruby. An iconic gemstone, the ruby has been revered for centuries due to its durability and outstanding appearance. Often associated with love and passion, the ruby was also believed to increase the wearer’s strength, likely due to its durable material.

The ruby is certainly strong on the eyes, and you can have your own July jewellery with a necklace, earrings or elegant bracelet.

August birthstone – Peridot

A Peridot bracelet.

August’s birthstone is the fascinating bright green peridot. Often found in Egypt, Myanmar and the United States, peridots always have the fixed colour of green despite varying shapes. The variation of peridot you see can depend on where it was found. Peridots are believed to protect the wearer and even fight off evil spirits during sleep.

The alluring gemstone is sure to catch the eye and perhaps a reassuring sense of security due to its suggested abilities. Our range features peridot stud earrings, a halo bracelet and a beautiful necklace. The perfect August birthday gifts.

September birthstone – Sapphire

A Sapphire ring.

If you have a September birthday, then we’re extremely jealous! Sapphire is the birthstone for September, and this stone’s incredible deep blue hues are almost impossible not to get lost in. A famous gemstone for centuries, sapphires are sure to dazzle wherever they appear. The sapphire’s spiritual and emotional elements represent peace, clarity and emotional balance.

The most famous sapphire jewellery is Princess Diana’s engagement ring, which was then passed down to Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. Find your own special sapphire ring, or keep our birthstone close to your heart with a gorgeous necklace.

October birthstone – Opal

A pair of Opal earrings.

If you’re born in October and fancy yourself as elegant and sophisticated, you’ve certainly got the birthstone to match. Opal is October’s birthstone, and its charming and chic appearance can alter as flashes of colour move as the stone is turned. These stones have even been associated with magic, likely due to their unique colour abilities. Some even believed that opals could turn the wearer invisible!

Our opal jewellery may not be able to make you disappear, but why would you want to when wearing such gorgeous earrings, rings, or charms?

November birthstone – Golden Topaz

A Golden Topaz bracelet.

The wonderfully named golden topaz is the birthstone for November.
